John Edward Hasse

John Edward Hasse is a music historian, musician, and award-winning author and record producer. He is curator of American Music at the National Museum of American History, Smithsonian Institution, where he was co-director of America’s Jazz Heritage and founding executive director of the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra. He is a member of the New Orleans Jazz Commission, the author of the acclaimed biography Beyond Category: The Life and Genius of Duke Ellington (Da Capo Press) and the editor of Ragtime: Its History, Composers, and Music (Palgrave Macmillan). Hasse has received two ASCAP Deems Taylor Awards for excellence in writing about music. He also edited Jazz: The First Century published by Pearson/Prentice-Hall.
